Students Succeed at Regeneron Science Fair

Two University School of Milwaukee students have earned top marks at the 2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair: Mya Johnson ’21 and Max Watchmaker ’23.

Johnson is one of two scholarship recipients who will attend the Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute hosted by The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science. Johnson’s project was titled "Computer-Aided Investigation of Methoctramine-ExoU Interactions."

Watchmaker won the third grand award in the category of Environmental Engineering for his project, "The Dispersion of Micron-Sized Aerosolized Particles Under Variable Air Environments: Implications in Respiratory Disease Transmission."

Four USM students in total competed at Regeneron ISEF: Buwei Chen ’22, Mya Johnson ’21, Jordan Thomas ’23, and Max Watchmaker ’23. They were the top three projects from the Badger State Science and Engineering Fair and the top two from the USM Regional Fair. They competed against more than 1,800 young scientists representing 49 states and 64 countries across the world.

This year’s competition was virtual, and students prepared videos, presentations, and papers to showcase a year’s worth of work. They defended their projects virtually in front of nine to 20 scientists during a four-hour window, and they also engaged in a virtual public viewing, where they answered questions from school groups and interested visitors. “Of course, all of this was completed while managing their normal school work and attending classes here at home,” said Robert Juranitch, Upper School science teacher. “Through it all, our students were amazing ambassadors for science, USM, and Wisconsin.”
